Purepage Server
4.0 User Guide
Searching Sites
Providing Site searching for your users is an excellent way of allowing them to
instantly find the information they are looking for. It will save users from scanning
the entire Site to locate the relevant information, it will allow users to quickly view
the information and, most importantly, it will make your Sites easy to use.
Purepage Server can be configured to work with virtually any third party web search
engine. Most search engines provide thorough documentation on setting up their
search functionality. We have chosen one of the most popular search engines
(Microsoft Index Server) to focus on here although other search engines are just as
easy to use.
Microsoft Index Server
This example details how to configure a Site for searching using Microsoft Index
Server on Windows 2000 or XP. Note, the steps to configure on NT 4 are slightly
different and you will need to refer to Index Servers documentation if you are using
NT 4. This example assumes that you are also serving the site using the Microsoft
Internet Information Services web server. Microsoft Index Server is free and comes
on the Windows 2000 and XP CDs. If you are running Windows NT 4 then you will
need to download and install the Windows NT Option Pack.
Creating the Index Server Catalog
The first step (in configuring Index Sever to search your Site) is telling Index Server
what directories it should index. Index Server will index these directories and build
up a database of its results that the users will be able to query. This database is called
a Catalog.
