Purepage Server 4.0
How does it work?

This page acts as a white paper describing how Purepage Server works - cutting straight to the chase. If you have any questions that are not answered here satisfactorily please feel free to let us know by e-mailing info@purepage.com.

Purepage Server allows you to create Sites to house and publish your organizations documents to the Intranet. With each installation you can create an unlimited number of Sites. Sites work just like a normal web site and are a good way to separate the content of different departments. Each Site may contain an unlimited number of folders and sub-folders which serve as an excellent way to organize content within your Sites.  Each folder (or sub-folder) contains documents contributed by users.

Importantly, administrators retain total control over who can view, contribute, change and search for content for any given Site, folder or sub-folder by using standard Windows NT file and folder permissions and web server permissions.  Purepage Server honors these permissions and retains them with each publishing of your Site thus reducing administrative demand and maintenance.

Purepage Server makes contributing content easy for users via a number of methods. Users with Internet Explorer may simply click the “submit” link when browsing Sites from their web browser to submit their content to the current location. Purepage Server’s integration with your network’s file system also allows users to contribute content using the file system - for example copying a file to a Site folder will cause Purepage Server to publish the file to the Site. Additionally users who are traveling or outside the organization may submit content using FTP (File Transfer Protocol).

Purepage Server offers administrators a number of options when publishing Sites.  Manual publishing is available at any time at the click of a button while scheduled publishing can be set on a per-Site basis allowing for publishing at convenient times (for example, off-peak, to eliminate network load). Importantly, Purepage offers administrators full control over the settings that control how the documents and Sites are published including the ability to “brand” the published Sites with your company logo, graphics and slogans etc.

Purepage Server renders each new or changed document in your Sites into HTML making it viewable by anyone with a web browser. Purepage Server ensures your published documents retain the look and feel of the original documents (including layout, links, images, formatting, fonts etc.) by relying on the latest HTML standards found in all version 4.x or later browsers. This ensures that users see the documents as the author intended.

By relying on HTML for the presentation of rendered documents, Purepage Server eliminates the security concerns some software places on your network by relying on Java plug-in based viewing solutions. This also eliminates the need for end users and administrators to download, install and maintain proprietary viewing plugins that may not be supported in the future.  Purepage Server allows your users to view all content on the Site using their familiar and easy to use web browser!

During the publishing of your Sites, Purepage Server creates the document portal that allows end users to easily navigate, access, find and contribute document content within the Site. Of course, the document portal is accessible using any standard web browser.  The document portal retains your Windows NT file and folder permissions as well as your web server permissions so you can control which content users can view and access.

Purepage Server allows you to serve the published Site content using any standard web server - simply point it to the right folder.  This allows end users to view content in a familiar way and allows tight integration to other areas of your Intranet or web site.

Providing Site searching for your users is an excellent way of allowing them to quickly find and access the information they are looking for. Purepage Server can quickly be configured to work with virtually any third party search engine to provide advanced full-text search capabilities.
